Where to buy tempeh?

Where to Buy Tempeh in the UK

When we first tried tempeh about a decade ago, it was largely confined to health food shops. Heavily pasteurised and compressed with a vacuum bag, it wasn’t really for us. But these days - along with being able to buy directly froim us - you can find this nutritious, protein-and-fibre rich superfood in a whole range of outlets.

Health Food Shops

Local health food shops are still a strong contender for finding tempeh. These stores typically stock a range of natural and organic products, including tempeh. Shops like Holland & Barrett, as well as independent health food retailers, frequently carry branded options and sometimes even locally made varieties. It’s worth visiting your nearest health shop, as they may also offer alternatives such as marinated tempeh.

Supermarkets

Major supermarket chains have begun to recognise the growing demand for plant-based options, with many now including tempeh in their product ranges. Stores like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi, LIDL and Morrisons often have tempeh available in the chilled sections. As a small producer it is still great to see bigger brands more widely available here and abroad: the more access people have to tempeh, the better!

Online Retailers

For those who prefer the convenience of online shopping, various retailers offer tempeh delivery throughout the UK. Websites such as Ocado, or online specialty retailers will provide a range of brands and flavours. Shopping online not only offers convenience but also the opportunity to explore different types of tempeh that may not be available at your local shops.

Farmers' Markets

Visiting a farmers' market can be a delightful way to discover artisanal and locally made tempeh. Many farmers' markets feature stalls that sell handmade products, including tempeh made by small-scale producers. This option allows you to support local businesses while enjoying fresh and possibly unique varieties of tempeh.

Vegan and Vegetarian Stores

Dedicated vegan and vegetarian shops are an excellent resource for tempeh enthusiasts. Stores that focus exclusively on plant-based products often carry several brands and flavours of tempeh. Notable retailers such as Mighty Plants and The Vegan Supermarket are good places to explore comprehensive selections of plant-based proteins.

Direct from Producers

Finally, consider purchasing tempeh directly from producers. Many small manufacturers offer direct sales through their websites or at local food fairs. This option not only allows you to get fresh tempeh but also gives you insight into the production process and the opportunity to support local businesses. It is also currently the only way of buying tempeh that was made by hand in the UK.

We freeze all of our tempeh to keep it as fresh as possible (without the need to pasteurise), and ship out in box lined with returnable recycled denim liners, to keep it all nicely frozen until it reaches your doorstep.

In conclusion, whether you prefer shopping in-store or online, there are numerous options for sourcing tempeh across the UK. With so many places to find this nutritious food, it’s easier than ever to include it in your diet and reap the benefits of its high protein and fibre content.
